HOPKINSVILLE, KY –As Hopkinsville braces for an upcoming winter storm, the Salvation Army is taking action to ensure no one is left out in the cold. The organization’s EWE White Flag Shelter, located at 701 South Clay Street, opened this past weekend and will remain operational as long as temperatures stay at or below 25 degrees. The EWE White Flag shelter will be open from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. to anyone looking to get in out of the cold.

Under the leadership of Lieutenants David and Brittney Donegan, who assumed command this past summer, the Salvation Army has enhanced its ability to serve the community during emergencies. With a background in emergency disaster services, the Donegans’ introduced a Rapid Response Unit (RRU) vehicle to Hopkinsville.

This innovative vehicle, equipped with four-wheel drive, allows the Salvation Army to reach remote and difficult-to-access areas. As the storm approaches, the RRU will be deployed to provide vital supplies, including blankets, food, and water, to individuals unable to come in from the elements. “The RRU ensures that even those in the hardest-to-reach places will receive the help they need,” said Lt. David.

In addition to the RRU, the Salvation Army will continue operating its Center of Hope Shelter at 301 East 7th Street and the low-barrier White Flag Shelter. Both locations will offer extended hours during the storm to guarantee anyone seeking refuge has a warm, safe place to stay.

Lt. Brittney emphasized the importance of hospitality and nourishment during this critical time. “We want everyone who comes in to be our guest to leave with a full stomach,” she said. “Our mission is to provide not just shelter but a sense of comfort and care during these challenging conditions.”

The community’s response to the Salvation Army’s expanded winter services has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the organization’s dedication and innovative approach. The Donegans’ focus on reaching those in need wherever they may be is already making a meaningful impact in Hopkinsville.
