HOPKINSVILLE, KY – After weeks of uncertainty, Christian County Public Schools has confirmed that the renovations at the Stadium of Champions will be completed at the start of football season. The Christian County High School Tigers will host Cooper High School in the inaugural football game on Aug. 21 on the newly laid turf at the stadium.
“This is an important milestone for Christian County High School,” said Superintendent Chris Bentzel. “Our students and community have been looking forward to this moment, and we are excited to kickoff Friday nights at the Stadium of Champions as the home of the Tigers.”
History of renovations at stadium
The extensive $2 million renovation of the stadium was included with the construction budget for the new Christian County High School. The plan included brand new artificial turf on the play field, improvements to the entrance, paving of the gravel driveway, relocating fencing, and putting in a new track around the field.
The project was initially delayed to accommodate graduations, with crews unsure if it would be finished before the first home game. At the latest school board meeting on Aug. 6, board members were informed that progress with installing the turf was moving quickly, with crews working into the night. With the “carpet” section of the turf down, sand and crumb rubber will be distributed to give the surface its grasslike grip.
Most recently, the Board of Education invested around $140,000 to repair a small sinkhole that was uncovered during construction at the stadium. The repair was made by excavating the area and refilling the hole.
