HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) –The fourth annual Christian County Literacy Council Spelling Bee took place on Sept. 30 in Hopkinsville. This yearly event is known to challenge local, young minds and promote literacy in the city.

Spellers took the stage throughout the night spelling words like ‘imaginary,’ ‘burial,’ ‘antibiotic,’ and more. Sarah Jackson, Avishi Shah, and Ella Turner came in first, second and third place in the grades 3-5 Division.

In the upper division, Brandon Toliver, Zoe Davis, and John Carson Vergara took first, second, and third place.

All winners received a certificate as well as coupons for the new Literacy Launcher, a book vending machine located in Visit Hopkinsville.

This annual competition began in 2021 with only 35 contestants. Each year, Francene Gilmer with the literacy council hopes to grow the event as it showcases local students and community support.
