HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A family of five was involved in a wreck with a semi-truck early Friday morning while they were attempting to merge onto the interstate.

On Aug. 16, at about 2:50 a.m., a semi-truck was traveling eastbound on I-24 in the right lane, according to the Christian County Sheriff’s Office traffic collision report.

At the same time, a white Dodge Ram pickup truck carrying five people was leaving the exit ramp and merging onto I-24 eastbound, pulling a car trailer behind them. The pickup truck began merging into the right lane, in the direct path of the semi.

According to the report, the driver of the semi quickly locked his brakes in an attempt to slow down, but still struck the rear of the trailer the pickup truck was pulling. The impact caused the driver of the Dodge to lose control, and the car trailer became detached in the wreck, leaving the roadway before finally coming to rest in a nearby wooded area.

The traffic report notes visible skid marks observed on the scene, supporting the driver of the semi’s story that he was, in fact, in his lane of travel and unable to stop or avoid the collision of the pickup truck pulling into his path.

CCSO deputies responded to the scene shortly after and were told by the female adult passenger of the Dodge that she believed the driver in her vehicle was swerving on the roadway prior to the collision. She, along with three children (ages 16, 5, and 3) were transported by Oak Grove EMS to Jenny Stewart Medical Center for evaluation.

According to the report, all injuries observed on scene appeared to be superficial scratches due to shattered class. No injuries were reported by the drivers of the semi or pickup truck. Both the semi-truck and the Dodge and car trailer were disabled and towed from the scene.

It is not believed that drugs or alcohol played a factor in this collision.
