HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Walking through the sunshine and blooming trees in downtown Hopkinsville on Tuesday, you would never know that just days ago the entire area was under water. While this area is clear, highwater is still prevelant throughout the county. During the April 8 Christian County Fiscal Court meeting, Judge Executive shared that just under 14 inches of rainfall ended up falling during last week’s storms.

“I’ve never seen a community come together like we did,” said Gilliam, who publicly acknowledged the contributions from Fort Campbell to Garrison Commander COL Christopher Midberry during the meeting. Dozens of soldiers from Fort Campbell volunteered to help fill sandbags and deliver them to Oak Grove residents on Saturday.

Gilliam said damage assessment is ongoing, and rescues are continuing as vehicles attempt to drive through areas of highwater. There have also been several reports of people moving barricades out of the way or driving around them, which Gilliam renounces. Heavily trafficked areas like Pembroke Oak Grove Road still have stretches of high water that are unsafe to drive through. He added that full recovery will be a timely process, with dozens of families still displaced in the county.

Hopkinsville Public works has shared that a portion of Hurst Drive is still closed along with Cardinal Drive, and South Cavalcade Circle at Secretariat. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is still listing the following state roads as having high water.
