HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A police pursuit took place downtown in Hopkinsville on Friday, ending at West Side Park where an individual died from self-inflicted injuries.
Law enforcement agencies in the area were requested to attempt to locate an Evansville, Indiana man to conduct a welfare check. Hopkinsville Police Officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop in an effort to check on his well-being, according to a news release from HPD.
The man, later identified as 29-year-old Jacob Weaver, was ultimately located in the city limits of Hopkinsville. Before officers could make contact with Weaver, he fled the scene traveling towards the downtown Hopkinsville area.
Weaver was stopped again near South Main Street and West Seventh Street, where officers discovered Weaver had severe, self-inflicted wounds. Officers attempted to remove Weaver from the vehicle to provide medical aid, but Weaver fled again before officers could do so.
Multiple Deputies from the Christian County Sheriff’s Office became involved in the pursuit and performed a PIT Maneuver on Weaver’s vehicle. His vehicle came to a final stop at West Side Park, where officers and EMS worked tirelessly to perform life-saving measures. Jacob was transported to Jennie Stuart Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.
“The Hopkinsville Police Department would like to extend our deepest condolences to Jacob’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” said a statement from HPD. “We also want to take this opportunity to remind our community that if you are struggling with mental health challenges, you are not alone. Help is available, and support is within reach.”
