HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Talented local students spent a week of their summer vacation flexing their artistic abilities to help bring more public art to downtown Hopkinsville. During this year’s Mural Art Camp by the Pennyroyal Arts Council, participants worked on these large scale pieces that are all inspired by jazz.
As the camp finished, five works of art painted on wood boards are now displayed on the back of the Alhambra Theater. Each painting is intended to echo the rhythm and soul of Hopkinsville’s jazz legacy. This weeklong camp was led by Paula Gieseke, who worked alongside budding artists to create the masterpieces.
In previous years, participants in the camp created the bold “Hoptown” mural on East Sixth Street, and the large mural on the side of Hopkinsville Brewing Company that was inspired by a Ross Gay poem.
This year the camp was open to students in fifth grade and beyond, which is an expansion of age from previous years. The Pennyroyal Arts Council regularly brings jazz to the Alhambra stage throughout the year, which transforms the space into a vibrant jazz club for fun performances.
Along with the Jazz on Stage series, patrons can regularly catch live music of various genres throughout the year. See this season’s schedule on the Pennyroyal Arts Council website.
