HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The founder and executive director of Joy Closet in Hopkinsville has announced her resignation, just days after the nonprofit hit a significant milestone with the opening of Hope House.
“With a heavy heart, I share that I have made the difficult decision to resign from my role as Executive Director of Joy Closet,” said a statement from Heather Gray. “Serving this incredible organization and advocating for the foster and kinship communities, children in crisis, and teens aging out of the foster system has been one of the greatest honors of my life. I am deeply grateful to the volunteers, donors, and prayer warriors who have supported the mission and trusted me to be a part of it.”
Just days ago, the organization launched Hope House, which is a temporary, transitional living space for kids who are first entering the foster care system and are waiting for placement. On Sept. 5, Gray cut the ribbon for the house and expressed gratitude for the support.
September marked the fourth anniversary of the establishment of Joy Closet, which continues to supply a free closet for foster/kinship youth, allowing them to obtain clothes and comfort items in their home placements. During the past few years, Gray has also launched the Joyful consignment store in downtown Hopkinsville, where proceeds support their mission. She also helped recently expand programs to support teens aging out of the foster care system.
“Every child deserves to know they are special, valued, and loved. Thank you to my dedicated team for standing with me and helping carry the vision that God entrusted me with over the past four years. It has been a privilege to work alongside each of you in advancing this mission,” said Gray’s statement regarding her resignation. “As I step away, my prayer is that the current leadership stays true to the original vision, one that is built on a foundation of faith. The children and families in the Pennyrile Area deserve this continued dedication. I trust that the work will continue to shine, even in the face of adversity.”
Julia Roberts currently serves as assistance executive director for Joy Closet, but the plan for filling Gray’s position has not been released.
