HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The new Christian County High School’s gym will feature a high-tech video scoreboard after the Christian County Board of Education approved the upgrade at Thursday’s workshop meeting.
The scoreboard will be approximately seven feet tall and nine feet wide with video screens on all four sides, according to Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jason Wilson during the Nov. 6 meeting. The new Tigers logo will also be printed on the bottom of the board, as shown in plans presented to the board. The change order to upgrade the scoreboard was approved for an adjusted rate of an additional $7,000 over the original cost.
“It will be a normal scoreboard, but with the things you see at a college basketball game or something like that, where you can do the intros for students as they come in,” he said. “We’ll also be able to use it like for a presentation or something.”
The main gym will fit just over 3,000 people with two levels of seating being built. Wilson previously told Christian County Now that the graphics and design of the gym will create an impressive space, with both legacies of the schools acknowledged.

Upgrade possible due to budget savings
Board member Rebecca Pepper said the high-tech scoreboard was possible thanks to savings from other areas saying, “We stayed so well within budget, so we’re able to use some of this money to do upgrades.”
Superintendent Chris Bentzel agreed, noting that the district remains financially secure as the project continues. He said that incoming change orders totaled $157,000, with the district still having $3.9 million available in their contingency fund.
The new scoreboard will also include shot clocks, another feature common in collegiate and professional arenas. Wilson said the board’s design aligns with the overall vision for the new gym. Cost will also be offset by selling advertisements on the video board throughout the athletic seasons.
“We worked really hard on finding ways to save money in some other areas of the gym so that we would have money to be able to do this,” added Wilson during the meeting. “I’m excited. I think the kids will like it, and I think it will be something fun for everybody. We’ve got a kind of college arena feel in our new gym, and this will just set it off. And make it that much nicer.”
