HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Some local non-profits are providing a high volume of hot Thanksgiving plates to the community this Thursday. Combined, Pioneers Inc., the Salvation Army and the Aaron McNiel House will serve over 1,000 people in the area.
The Hopkinsville Salvation Army is one of the local places preparing a Thanksgiving meal for community members in need. Festive food will be served during their regular mealtime at 11:30 a.m. at 313 East Seventh Street. Soup Kitchen Coordinator Shelia Croney told Christian County Now that her passion and love for cooking pushes her to cook for over 100 people every day for nearly 15 years.
For the holiday she will be prepping over a dozen turkeys for incoming patrons. This will be paired with other Thanksgiving staples like green beans, corn, potato salad, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and her signature homemade dressing. While she looks forward to prepping for the holidays, she prioritized good food daily soup kitchen patrons.
“I want them to have a hearty meal every day,” said Croney. “It’s not just one day a year on Thanksgiving or on Christmas, it’s every day for me.” She added that volunteer numbers have been dwindling lately, and they are always looking for people who are looking to volunteer their time to prepare and serve food.
Aaron McNeil House and Pioneers Inc.
In addition to the Salvation Army, two other locations are providing delicious food on Thanksgiving Day. Aaron McNeil House Inc. will be providing drive through plates in collaboration with Breaking Bread Dinner Church. These can be picked up from 1-2 p.m. at 604 East Second Street.
Aside from the holiday, the non-profit provides frequent, free food distributions to community members at the fairgrounds. The next one after Thanksgiving will be on Dec. 6 at 8 a.m.
From 10 a.m. through noon, the Pioneers Inc. will be providing drive through plates at their 904 North Main Street location. They are estimated to serve around 900 people homecooked Thanksgiving favorites.
The Pioneers have created a name for themselves in Hopkinsville with their food, offering the community BBQ cookouts throughout the majority of the year with their signature chicken, ribs, and pork. They also can be hired for catering services, with the mission to advance social, cultural, and civic awareness in Christian County.
