HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A Hopkinsville man driving around with a backpack full of marijuana ran from police during a traffic stop on Friday afternoon.
On March 21 around 4:30 p.m., a patrol vehicle with the Hopkinsville Police Department observed a vehicle on Walnut Street illegally passing other cars over the double yellow line at a high rate of speed of speed. A traffic stop was attempted, and the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Steven Cager of Hopkinsville, drove the vehicle into a parking lot and began fleeing on foot.
According to an arrest report, the suspect fell and was given verbal commands to roll over and keep his hands visible. The arresting officer says the suspect attempted to stand up and a taser was deployed before he was taken into custody.
Open containers of alcohol were found inside the vehicle, along with a black backpack which had a “large quantity” of marijuana and a digital scale. HPD says the suspect denied a field sobriety test and a search warrant was obtained to conduct a blood draw. He was medically cleared at Jennie Stuart Medical Center and was taken to the Christian County Jail.
Cager is being charged with Trafficking in Marijuana, Fleeing or Evading Police, DUI, and several traffic violations.
