HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Tis the season for porch pirates and valuables left in unlocked cars. Officer Royale Marfil, the Public Information Officer with the Hopkinsville Police Department has shared some tips to help protect purchases during the hustle and bustle of the holidays.
Protect packages
The best way to make sure packages and important mail are not stolen from your porch is to schedule a delivery day and time where you will be home. If a package is delivered while you are away, have a trusted neighbor bring it inside their home until you come back.
In the case that a package is stolen, check with the company to see if they offer package insurance, and call HPD to file a report about the theft.
Car break ins
While out shopping at multiple stores, it’s common to keep shopping bags and gifts in plain view inside cars. HPD recommends keeping valuable items in the trunk or covered with a blanket.
Most importantly, ensure that the car is locked. Most thieves looking to steal are checking handles for unlocked cars. They are less likely to break a window in attempt to steal.
