HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – With school back in session, it won’t be long until sick days start piling up for kids. Stuffy noses and coughs are often a signifier that go along with every new school year, but the Christian County Health Department has some information to pass along to help keep kids, and their families healthy.

While immersing a child in an environment with lots of new people, and lots of new germs can cause illnesses quickly, Cloie Rager from the Health Department reassures that something as simple as handwashing can go a long way.

“Here at the Christian County Health Department we know historically that sickness, including cold, flu, and COVID-19, typically always increase when school is back in session. … It can be difficult to attempt to keep kids healthy as they go back to school, but it’s important to keep up with important mitigation efforts for sicknesses … including handwashing (and hand washing education for children), mask wearing when necessary, and staying home when sick.”

To prevent the cold and flu from spreading rapidly through classrooms, Cloie reminds parents and guardians that especially when a child is running a fever, it is important to keep them home from school.

And in situations where COVID-19 is suspected, rapid test kits are available for pickup at the front desk of the Christian County Health Department during regular business hours. If there is a positive result, then it is important to follow the quarantine guidelines put out by the department.
