HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Christian County and Kentucky Division of Waste Management are hosting a waste tire collection event April 4-6 to allow county residents the opportunity to properly dispose of tires. This event occurs every few years and brings in massive amounts of tires that are able to be recycled throughout the state.

They received around 29,000 tires during the event in 2020, according to Jim Fleming, the Solid Waste Enforcement Officer in Hopkinsville. The tires can be used to create mulch for playgrounds, mixed in with flat top to pave roads, and are used to make floor mats among other things.

“There are a lot more uses today than there have ever been, and they are all the time looking for things to use them for,” said Fleming. “I feel good every time we have one because it really does clean up our county.”

Fleming also added that improperly disposing of tires attracts different pests like mosquitos and snakes that will make homes inside of them. A tire would also take multiple years to begin properly breaking down.

Christian County Judge Executive Jerry Gilliam spoke highly of the event, encouraging the community to come out. He said people don’t even need to get out of the car, their unloading team will be in place to keep the line moving.

The tire collection is funded by a grant and is completely free for Kentucky residents. Tires of various sizes will be accepted on or off the rim, excluding tire retailers, salvage yards, and recycle businesses. Foam or calcium filled tires will not be accepted, along with construction tires. The event will take place April 4-6 at 4785 Pembroke Road in Hopkinsville. They will accept tires from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and until noon on Saturday. For more information, call the solid waste coordinator at 270-889-4850.
