HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A local woman lost several thousand dollars in a phone scam on Monday as the Christian County Sheriff’s Office warns of an influx of impersonating calls.

The Hopkinsville Police Department is currently investigating an incident where a 71-year-old woman was targeted in this scam on June 29. A person posing as a CCSO deputy over the phone convinced her to pay $4,500. No arrests have been made in connection to this specific call, but a suspect could potentially face a charge related to unlawful access to a computer.

Just days before this investigation, CCSO warned the public about the circulating scam, saying that they recently received reports of people impersonating deputies over the phone. The calls usually say that the person has missed jury duty, had an outstanding warrant or owed fines. Scammers often threaten that callers will be arrested if they do not pay.

“The Christian County Sheriff’s Office will never call you and demand payment over the phone to prevent your arrest,” said a statement from CCSO. “We will never ask you to pay a fine, bond, or warrant through gift cards, payment apps, cryptocurrency, or any other form of electronic payment. We will also never request sensitive financial or personal information over the phone for this purpose.”

Anyone who receives a call like this is encouraged to not comply with the demands and hang up. Residents are encouraged to call CCSO directly with questions or concerns at 270-887-4141.
