HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Two 12-year-old boys that were hit by a car outside of Christian County Middle School are recovering well at home, according to Christian County Public Schools Superintendent Chris Bentzel.

In a video statement shared by CCPS, Bentzel said the accident was a scary moment for several students, staff members and coaches as they witnessed the crash Monday afternoon. The two students were walking across Glass Avenue to football practice when they were hit, and they were transported via ambulance for their injuries.

“Every day at dismissal, staff, teachers and coaches are in place at CCMS to help with traffic and students who may be walking to practice or nearby neighborhoods after school, and yesterday was no exception,” said Bentzel. “Yesterday’s incident is a good reminder for all of us to pay extra attention in school zones and limit our distractions while driving.”

A collision report released by the Hopkinsville Police Department shows that the driver of the car involved in the accident is not facing any charges at this time. She told officers that she was traveling eastbound on Glass Avenue when she saw a bus turning right into CCMS, but she did not see the students in the road.

Lights warning drivers about the school zone were flashing at the time of the accident. The report says inattention and the driver exceeding the posted speed limit contributed to the accident.

“Yesterday could have turned out very differently,” said Bentzel. He thanked administrators and staff who acted quickly to help, and emergency services who arrived at the scene within minutes. In response to the accident, counseling and additional support will be available to students who need it.
