HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – To kick off the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library’s summer reading program, the community is invited to submit items for a time capsule that will be opened 10 years from now.
Jada Newell, Genealogy Librarian at HCCPL says everyone is welcome to donate meaningful items to the project, “We truly want this time capsule to reflect the spirit of our community…Our goal is to preserve items that demonstrate what life was like in the Hopkinsville-Christian County area in 2026.”
According to HCCPL, items that go in the time capsule must be able to fit in a small 2″X 2″ X 2″ box that will be provided by the library. Newell suggested toys and trinkets that capture today’s pop culture, or items such as family photos, drawings and handwritten letters to share memories. People should avoid perishable or plastic items and technology.
For more ideas, the library recommends participants can include self-portraits, hand or footprints, a letter for your future self, a bucket list, or letter from parents to children. Students may want to contribute class assignments or school projects/achievements or books.
Registration is required for those who wish to contribute to the time capsule. It will be assembled, sealed and buried during a ceremony at 11 a.m. on June 6 at its resting place in front of the library.
This year’s theme for the summer reading program is “Unearth a Story,” with dinosaur related activities scheduled throughout the summer beginning with their kickoff party on May 30. The block party will have life-like dinosaurs, face painting, food trucks and games. Plus, the first 100 kids will receive a special activity book.
Register for the time capsule on the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library website.
