OAK GROVE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – While the first day of the Spring Into Summer festival drew massive crowds, day two was canceled as sudden storms ripped through the region.
“We are grateful everyone was safe, and no one was harmed during the storm,” said Scarlett Mayfield, the public relations manager with Visit Oak Grove. As severe weather began Sunday morning, War Memorial Park was filled with carnival rides, tents, trailers, and vendors getting ready for the day. Mayfield told Christian County Now they were monitoring the weather and made sure everyone took cover inside Valor Hall before the storm hit.
After the storms, it was discovered that no tents were salvageable from the straight-line winds, and several vendors lost their items. Mayfield said several trees fell, with a tree even falling across the path where vendors were set up. After assessing the damage, they got to work clearing the area.
“We had our team along with a few volunteers from MAC, the mayor and her husband, and even some of the vendors and our family members came out once the storm passed to help with cleaning up anything we could,” said Mayfield. “It was amazing to see everyone pull together and work together to get it cleaned up.”
They spent the majority of Sunday clearing away the destroyed tents, cutting trees, and removing limbs. As of Tuesday, the park remains closed while more trees are cleared, and the area is deemed safe.
Mayfield is grateful for the community’s support of Spring Into Summer preceding the storms, and considers Saturday’s festivities a success, “I would say that it was a successful day and night, and we are so glad we got to have a wonderful performance with so much support.”
