HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Tom Britton, the Executive Director of Community and Development Services in Hopkinsville, presented a new zoning classification option to city council that would accommodate transitional areas. The department has been prioritizing zoning all properties in city limits, recently making their way through around 600 unzoned parcels.
“With our zoning ordinance we really do not have a truly transitional or kind of holding district.” Britton told the council. “The western area of Hopkinsville has been interesting; it has been a challenge.”
The proposed agricultural transitional district would mostly apply to properties in western Hopkinsville near the bypass and Bradshaw Road. Many of the agricultural properties in this area have large acreage, some up to 100 acres. The future land use map the department uses has these areas listed as mixed use or transitional areas.
Britton told the council they have been discussing the AT district classification with property owners in the potentially affected areas and have received unanimously favorable feedback. This new distinction would allow properties zoned as AT to remain agricultural, while allowing the possibility of residential, commercial, or small industrial developments.
After Britton’s presentation, the council passed a motion to allow the proposed zoning amendment to be brought back to council at a future day to be put to a vote.
