HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Christian County Public Schools have added six new electric buses to their fleet. Grant money issued to 20 schools districts in the state allocated $2 million for the purchase of the buses, appropriate training, and necessary charging stations.
Superintendent Chris Bentzel is optimistic about the addition, further explaining that the grant process began 18 months ago. He said over the summer they have focused on training so the buses can be properly serviced and driven. He also hopes this will help with gasoline costs.
The new buses look nearly identical to traditional buses aside from an electric identifying sticker, although Bentzel noted they are significantly quieter.
“After running the routes, picking up students and making stops at 3 schools, the bus will return to the charging station with only having used about 40% of its battery,” said a statement from CCPS after a test run of a bus. “The bus will use receive a recharge during the day and will make the route on a full charge again this afternoon.”
