OAK GROVE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – And they’re off! Hooves and adorable dog paws will be running along the track in Oak Grove this spring and summer as live harness racing season kicks off at Oak Grove Gaming, Racing & Hotel.
Behind the casino and hotel on Winners Way is a 60,000 square foot equestrian center and 5/8 mile standardbred racing track that will see hundreds of racers coming through for the next few months during their seventh racing season. Unlike thoroughbred racing, standardbred racing has horsemen riding behind in a sulky at a slightly slower pace.
Admission to races is free, with a fun environment set up on the 13,000 square foot smoke-free grandstand overlooking the track. There is also a patio with view of the homestretch, finish line, and winners circle. Their indoor simulcast area allows people to make wagers during the race.
For even more fun over the summer, charity Corgi and wiener dog races will take place in May where people with the fastest dogs in the region can put their fur-babies directly on the track. Coaxed by a dog owner at the end of the 60-foot track, the tiny speed demons fly from their kennels. Last year’s wiener dog race saw a few little legs stall out, while some ran to victory.
Corgi races are a new addition this year, with all shapes and sizes of the breed anticipated to fill the grandstand. Registration for the races are still open, rules and forms can be found on the Oak Grove Gaming, Racing & Hotel website. The main goal of the event is to have fun while also raising funds for a worthy cause. In 2024, a portion of proceeds from Wiener Dog Race shirt sales benefited the Christian County Humane Society.
The wiener dog races will be on Sunday, May 25 between regularly scheduled live harness racing, with the Corgi races the previous week on May 11. Regular live harness races take place every Monday and Tuesday at 1:45 p.m. through July. Select weekend races will occur on May 3, May 11, and May 25.
