HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Local Planning Committee in Christian County approved a draft of the District Facility Plan that detailed extensive upgrades and future renovations to Christian County Public Schools and their facilities.

At their first meeting of the year on Jan. 7, CCPS teachers, principals, community members, and former school board members discussed various needs of schools that would require physical improvements, renovations, or additions. Discussions continued in April, where they planned priority #2 projects that would include work that will be done in the next two to four years, including school upgrades and renovations to match Kentucky Department of Education standards and create the DFP.

On April 29, the LPC held their third public meeting of the year, and members reviewed the draft of the plan that had updates from the Kentucky Department of Education. This short meeting approved the draft, which breaks down costs for various proposed construction projects.

Plans for renovations

Among the list of proposed renovations listed is HVAC renovation for Hopkinsville Middle School, and the construction of a band room, a cafeteria addition, and five science rooms totaling over $6 million. Around $5 million will be invested into Freedom Elementary, and Millbrooke Elementary will see over $7 million in renovations.

Over $3 million will be invested into Indian Hills Elementary School for a new HVAC, updates of 27 classrooms, bathroom ADA compliance, plumbing, band room update, lockers, reroofing of the gym, among other projects.

The most expensive renovation is with the Martin Luther King Jr. Early Learning Center, which KDE recommended moving to priority #2. Some projects for this facility include the installation of new sidewalks and ramps, a library renovation, several painting and ADA compliant projects, along with kitchen and lighting upgrades. This will total over $8.6 million for the MLK Early Learning Center.

Pembroke, Sinking Fork, and South Christian Elementary School improvements are also included in the plan. The DFP shows that these projects, and an additional $4.5 million renovation to Central Office would total around $55 million, with construction taking place after 2026.

Next, the plan will be presented at a school board meeting on May 15, and a public hearing will be set for later that month. The board will have final approval in June, and the plan will be submitted to KDE.
