HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Hopkinsville Police Department is bringing to light a phone scam that has reportedly targeted residents in the city.
Text messages from a source claiming to be the Kentucky DMV are being sent, saying they have unpaid parking tickets. The message prompts the recipient to pay for the ticket via a link. The message threatens action against the recipient if payment is not sent, including suspending vehicle registration, suspending driving privileges, and prosecution.
“Please do not click any links from phone numbers or email addresses that you do not recognize or associate with,” said a statement from HPD. “This is the perfect way for scammers to get personal information from their victims by creating a sense of fear and urgency. If you have gotten this message or similar messages, the safest way to navigate the situation is to delete and block the number that has sent the message.”
