FORT CAMPBELL, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – With cooler, dryer weather coming this fall, Fort Campbell has announced that they are approaching fire season on the military instillation, which means prescribed burns.
Their fire season typically extends from September through April, although there is a risk of wildfires year-round. According to a public statement shared by Fort Campbell, the Directorate of Public Works Forestry Branch will begin conducting prescribed burns in installation training areas to combat this.
When the burns take place, residents and community members may see excessive smoke in the rear areas of the installation. Fort Campbell says blackened fields are a sign that the land is being actively managed. Forestry personal will be onsite during the burns on Fort Campbell, and residents are encouraged to report all unattended fires.
The Forest Service with the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that the right fire at the right place at the right time can not only reduce the risk of wildfires but can be beneficial to the ecosystem. Prescribed or “controlled” burns can do the following:
- Reduces hazardous fuels, protecting human communities from extreme fires
- Minimizes the spread of pest insects and disease
- Removes unwanted species that threaten species native to an ecosystem
- Provides forage for game
- Improves habitat for threatened and endangered species
- Recycles nutrients back to the soil
- Promotes the growth of trees, wildflowers, and other plants
