HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – 70 years after the Kelly Little Green Men were reported to have beamed down in Christian County, Visit Hopkinsville is hosting two extraterrestrial events to celebrate the city’s connection to this famous alien encounter.

The 1955 Kelly encounter remains one of the most compelling and debated close encounters in UFO history, according to a news release from Visit Hopkinsville. They are proud to honor this unique piece of local lore with a celebration that embraces curiosity, wonder, and a touch of the extraordinary.

For a second year, the revamped Alien Invasion Day is returning to Hopkinsville on Aug. 23 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the visitor’s center.  This free event will feature an array of vendors, delicious bites from food trucks, and a cosplay contest.

“We are thrilled to bring back another Alien Invasion Day!” said Amy Rogers, Tourism Director. “This year is especially significant as we mark seven decades since the remarkable events that put Kelly, Kentucky on the map.”

The 2024 Alien Invasion Day was the first effort to revamp the previous Alien Days Festival that took place in Kelly, Kentucky every year. This new event drew people from across the region, with visitors arriving from out of state (and possibly from out of this world) to spend the day at the Hopkinsville Visitor’s Center.

Two months after Alien Invasion Day will be this year’s new, long anticipated GoblinCon UFO & Paranormal Expo at The Bruce on Oct. 17-18. Visitors will have a chance to dive deep into all things weird and wonderful with dozens of vendors, speakers, and guests.

More information about this event will be revealed at Alien Invasion Day, and a current list of vendors and activities can be found at the GoblinCon website.

August 21, 1955 encounter

The Kelly Little Green Men encounter is considered one of the most well documented and detailed alien sightings. The small town of Kelly tucked in northern Christian County got its claim to fame after five adults and seven children reported seeing small alien creatures attacking their farmhouse.

Visit Hopkinsville’s website further explains this bit of history, detailing that the residents held off the aliens with gunfire for nearly four hours before reporting the incident to Hopkinsville Police. They claimed to see 12 to 15 short, dark figures popping up in windows and doorways.

This encounter has inspired documentaries, several investigations by ufologists, and even helped inspire the creation of the hit movie E.T. The Extra Terrestrial.
