HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Gov. Andy Beshear announced that President Donald Trump approved Public Assistance for 64 counties, including Christian County, that were affected by severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, flooding, landslides and mudslides on April 2, 2025, and 36 counties affected by severe storms, straight-line winds and tornadoes on May 16-17, 2025.
While residents work toward recovery, now the county is eligible to receive financial aid. According to their website, FEMA’s Public Assistance Program provides supplemental grants to state and local governments so communities can quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies.
Christian County Judge Executive Jerry Gilliam released the following statement to Christian County Now.
“This federal approval allows Christian County, along with other local jurisdictions and qualifying private non-profit organizations, to apply for reimbursement of eligible costs tied to emergency response and infrastructure repair. Covered expenses may include debris removal, repairs to public buildings and utilities, and protective measures undertaken during the disaster.
While the assistance is not available to individuals directly, it represents a vital resource to help the county recover more quickly and reduce the financial burden on local taxpayers. The next phase involves coordinating with FEMA and KYEM to assess reported damages and determine eligible recovery projects. The total reimbursement awarded will depend on the scope and validation of those assessments.
I appreciate our Emergency Manager, Randy Graham and his team for their tireless efforts in ensuring our documentation was complete and accurate.”
At the end of April, individual and household assistance was approved. This allowed residents who were affected by the flood in Hopkinsville to seek financial aid through FEMA. By the end of June, over 400 people had applied for individual assistance, with over $3 million approved for Christian County residents. The deadline for applying for individual assistance was July 25.
