HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A man hit a utility pole while fleeing the scene of an accident New Years Eve, attempting to evade police inside a Hopkinsville residence.
On Dec. 31 around 9 p.m., officers with the Hopkinsville Police Department were dispatched to an accident at the intersection of Thomas Street and North Drive, with one of the vehicles reportedly leaving the scene. HPD says the individual who reported the crash followed the fleeing vehicle, witnessing the suspect also hitting and damaging a utility pole nearby.
The vehicle that fled the scene was located by HPD on East 7th Street parked near the suspect’s mother’s residence. A consensual search of the home led officers to the suspect in a bedroom, according to an arrest report. The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Jonathan Rivas-Cruz, initially resisted arrest and officers noted that they smelled alcohol. He later underwent a blood draw at Jennie Stuart Health.
The man was transported to the Christian County Jail and is being charged with driving without a license, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting arrest, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
