CHRISTIAN COUNTY, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Christian County Fiscal Court submitted a grant application that will reinforce a two-mile stretch of Fentress Lane in the southern Christan County/Herndon area using a specific type of rubberized asphalt.
One mile of the road will be paved with the rubber-modified asphalt utilizing state grand dollars, and the other mile of the road will use the traditional asphalt. With this process, standard asphalt is combined with crumb rubber derived from recycled waste tires.
“The theory behind it is to determine if the rubberized asphalt holds up better than the traditional asphalt,” said Christian County Judge Executive Jerry Gilliam. He added this type of asphalt theoretically holds up better to horse traffic.
The fiscal court applied for the same grant to pave Millers Mill Road in 2024, with Witty Lane also previously receiving the rubberized asphalt. Wear and tear on both of these roads is often accredited to the high amount of horse and buggies that travel along the sides of the roads.
During discussion, Magistrate Josh Turner said these that roads do seem to be durable since they were paved. If the grant is awarded, the county will continue to report back to the state on the condition of the road.
The magistrates unanimously approved a resolution that permits Gilliam to sign the grant application.
