OAK GROVE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Oak Grove City Council made a decision about what company will provide trash services for the city and also learned about incoming grant money that will pave and resurface seven roads.

After hearing presentations from four different solid waste franchises during the May 6 Oak Grove City Council meeting, they ultimately voted to accept a five-year contract for service from Impact Waste Service.

Back in December, councilmembers voted to reject the contract from Stinky Pinky Inc. which was in line to become the city’s primary residential solid waste service. This decision led to a state of emergency by Mayor Jackie Oliver, who entered into a temporary agreement while the process started over.

What to expect from Impact Waste Service in Oak Grove

During questioning at the meeting, representative and Impact owner Blake James shared that the family-owned company is based out of Western Kentucky, with he and his father residing in north Christian County, “We are all about keeping our community clean.”

He explained that they have local customer service that will respond within 24 hours, and they are willing to be flexible with customers while remaining efficient. Impact is also able to provide residential recycling containers and offers a 10% discount for senior citizens. Regarding pickup of bulk items, he said customers are able to call and schedule a pickup for various items.

“We may not be the cheapest in residential, but I think our service will show that we are committed to the community,” said James, adding that they are the cheapest commercial option for solid waste disposal out of all the bids. They stressed the importance of having a positive partnership with the city.

Residential rates are:

  • $15.75/month for one bin
  • $20.75/month for two bins
  • Bulk items $9.00 each

After a brief recess, the council decided to award them the contract. The council will finalize details of the agreement at future meetings.

Grant for road improvements

Just under $950,000 in grant money has been awarded to the City of Oak Grove for road improvements including paving and resurfacing. Public Works Director Brian Ahart shared during the city council meeting that they submitted eight roads for grant funding, with seven of them approved. In contrast, last year they submitted 12 roads and were only awarded funding for one.

This means that the city will be initially responsible for the price tag, which will later be reimbursed by the state. Ahart said the city does not currently have that amount of capital available to spend on roads, so drafted contracts for construction stipulate that payments will be staggered. This will allow the city to utilize the grant with available road funds.

“We’re going to get almost $1 million of paving and it’s only going to cost the city about $160,000, so that’s pretty good,” said Ahart to the council. Roads that will fall under the grant for improvements include the following roads.

  • Carneal Lane
  • Cooper Drive
  • Good Hope Cemetery Road
  • Arrow Circle
  • Linda Drive
  • Bumpus Mills
  • Hugh Hunter

A timeline for road repairs has not been shared at this time. Bids for construction will first be put out and approved by the city before moving forward.
