HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Christian County Jail has established their first ever K-9 unit to help combat drugs and contraband in the facility.

The newly trained unit consists of Deputy Matthew Newby and K9 Hamer, according to a news release from the jail. Hamer is a narcotic detecting, no bite Belgian Malinois. They are hoping this change will reflect their commitment to safety for the inmates and staff members.

“During my campaign, I stated that I was committed to creating a safe jail for staff, inmates and our community,” said Jailer Adam Smith. “I remain committed to this standard by using innovative and collaborative programs to help deputies effectively do their job.”

Major Mike Sandbrink has been overseeing this new unit from conception, his previous experience as a handler with the Kentucky State Police made him a key asset. The Christian County Sheriff’s Office also helped with facilitate equipment, and helped to provide the appropriate training.

“We hope the K9 unit will serve as a deterrent to inmates and visitors who might otherwise attempt to introduce drugs into the jail,” said Jailer Smith. “The presence of this new team will allow us to further our efforts in preventing the introduction of drugs and contraband into the jails, thereby reducing health hazards among inmates, at the same time enhancing overall security and order.”
