HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Ward 5 Hopkinsville City
Councilmember Amy Craig announced that she is resigning her position, effective June 16.
The announcement came during the June 2 city council meeting, with Mayor James R. Knight commending her nine years served on the council and presenting her with a key to the city. Craig publicly acknowledged the reason behind her sudden departure, sharing that her husband will be doing missionary work in West Africa, specifically Ghana, for the next three years.
“Serving in this position in the past nine and a half years has been a complete honor,” said Craig to the council. She went on to express her gratitude to the mayor and fellow councilmembers, also adding that she will be moving back to Hopkinsville after the three years are up.
Process to fill seat coming later in June
Although this was Craig’s last meeting, the process to fill the vacant Ward 5 seat will not begin until after her official resignation date on June 16. At this time, the city will release an expedited timeline in which residents in the ward can apply to fill the seat, with the council ultimately choosing from the candidates.
Whoever is chosen to take over for Craig will hold the position through the end of 2026 and will surrender the seat to the winner of the November election. Anna Norris (R) and Carolyn Marie Hughes (D) are both on the ballot for the seat.
The council recently went through this process to fill another vacant seat in April, with Terry Meek selected to serve for ward 8 after his son resigned from the position in March. A total of four applicants put their hat in the ring and were publicly interviewed ahead of the council’s vote during the April 7 meeting.
