HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – During the Committee of the Whole meeting last week, Hopkinsville Police Chief, Jason Newby, gave a quarterly report of the department’s achievements and crime statistics for the first three months of 2024.
Newby told the committee he doesn’t like to compare stats to previous years but warns that upcoming months will likely bring more crime.
“The warmer it gets, the more active it’s going to get,” Newby said. “Now that it’s warm, people are coming out more, they’re staying out later and they’re getting into more stuff at night.”
For the first quarter, the police department made a total of 704 arrests with 18 of those arrests being juveniles. There have also been 251 reported vehicle collisions and 428 traffic citations.
The department was also able to remove a large number of drugs and weapons off the streets by seizing the following:
- 47.42 ounces of methamphetamine.
- 236 fentanyl doses (pills).
- 4.12 ounces of fentanyl.
- 42 guns.
Newby also gave an update on the increased camera presence around the city. “Those cameras may not be the best at preventing crime, but they are helping us solve crime,” Newby told the committee.
He explained that recently, the department was able to quickly identify and locate a suspect involved in a shooting near the Christian County Health Department due to strategically placed cameras.
As his time at the meeting came to an end, he credited the officers out on the streets every day, along with the Hopkinsville Fire Department for all doing their part to help keep the city safe.
