OAK GROVE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – At the Oak Grove City Council meeting on June 18, councilwoman Janet Edwards brought up the idea of reviving the Oak Grove Neighborhood Watch Committee. Before the meeting Edwards brought the idea to Facebook, receiving several positive responses from Oak Grove residents.

“Just after that post, I had 22 people join the neighborhood watch Facebook group. So, I would like council to be involved,” Edwards said.

In 2018, Oak Grove began neighborhood watch after several complaints about the rise in crime, Edward told Christian County Now. “The park was vandalized, cars were being broken into and bullying was rampant. We had a pretty strong start with about 8 captains, two co-leaders and about 7-8 core residents. We had monthly meetings at the Oak Grove Community Center with guest speakers,” Edwards said.

However, the group fell apart during the pandemic. Edwards, who recently retired from her day-to-day job said she wants to get the group rolling again since she has more time on her hands.

She plans to talk with Oak Grove Chief of Police Dennis Cunningham, and Christian County Sheriff Tyler DeArmond who help spearhead the countywide neighborhood watch groups.

“My vision is to have an active neighborhood watch that all residents can participate in. It will not be a patrol group, but rather an informational group to keep residents safe and informed,” said Edwards.
