HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A Hopkinsville man is facing animal cruelty charges after dogs were found in neglected conditions at his residence.

Five dogs were located on the suspect’s property on Pembroke Road while deputies attempted to serve a warrant on Nov. 20. One puppy was dead on arrival, and another was later euthanized. The arrest report from the Christian County Sheriff’s Office says there was no food in sight, and water bowls contained mud. Three of the four dogs were tied down with a heavy chain, which the animal control officer said was too heavy. The surviving dogs were taken in by the Christian County Animal Shelter.

“One had starved to death, one was barely alive and had to be humanely euthanized,” said a statement from the shelter. “One emaciated dog is here, one chunky bully with masses, and one mama dog who is currently mad at the world.”

On Nov. 21, the suspect identified as John Mann was discovered hiding at an address in Elkton, Kentucky and was taken to the Christian County Jail for a failure to appear warrant from a previous fleeing and traffic incident, along with a drug charge. He was additionally charged with torture of a dog and cruelty to animals.

“Thank you so much to Christian County Sheriff’s Office for saving the ones they could and to Hopkinsville Animal Control for bringing them to us. You are not unnoticed, and we appreciate all you guys do for our community,” said the shelter.
