HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Christian County Literacy Council is raising money with their annual Onions for Literacy fundraiser. People can purchase a ten-pound bag of sweet Vidalia onions that will be picked straight from the ground locally, and delivered.

Money raised from the onion sales will help fund all the programs they hold throughout the year, all with the goal of promoting literacy in the community. Real Men Read, the spelling bee, and events like the Yule Ball are just a few examples of what they do around Hopkinsville.

Why onions? Suzzie Thieke with the Literacy Council doesn’t have a straight answer for that. When they started the fundraiser in 2016, they experimented with other things to sell and ultimately landed on onions. All she knows is that people love them, and they enjoy providing them.

While the organization receives funding from other sources throughout the year, they are hoping to raise as much as they can with a modest goal of $2,500. While regulars tend to always buy, Thieke encourages new donors to consider participated because supporting the Literacy Council is supporting the community.

Bags of onions can be purchased on the Literacy Council website for $12 a bag, pick up locations will be set up for May. Find out more information about the programs they have to offer on the Literacy Council Facebook page.
