OAK GROVE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – On June 9, the Oak Grove Community Center organized a fan giveaway to assist residents without air conditioning.

Councilwoman Janet Edwards initiated the event in 2017 after receiving a call from a resident who was experiencing discomfort in her home due to lack of air conditioning. Edwards recalls that shortly after this incident, local police were required to conduct a welfare check on an elderly woman in the neighborhood. “When the officer entered the home, it was 92 degrees! I realized we had a problem in Oak Grove,” said Edwards.

Edwards later contacted Melissa Lynch, the community center director, stressing the city’s need for a fan distribution program. Edwards personally pledged her council pay and donated five fans. The following year, the local organization Rajah Temple expressed interest in assisting. Next year, all city council members joined in, and by 2020, the fan distribution had become an annual event.

Since 2015, volunteers and locals have donated over 250 fans to residents of Oak Grove. “We are looking forward to continuing this program,” said Edwards.

Tuesday morning, donated fans were distributed to residents in need. A few fans are still available and those interested can contact the Oak Grove Community Center at 270-640-7575.
