HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Pennyrile Area Community Band, comprised of about 40 local musicians of all ages, performed their spring concert, which was free and open to the public. This performance was led by conductor and director Lori Boehman Friday night in the Christian County Middle School Performing Arts Center.

The theme of this year’s concert was “My Favorite Things.” Program selections included several well-known and loved concert band pieces that were selected by band members, featuring notable composers such as Julie Giroux, Randall Standridge, Alfred Reed and more.

Several soloists were featured during the performance, including bass flute, saxophone, clarinet and a bassoon trio. Two guest conductors also took the stage, with Boehman in the band playing French horn.

Dedication to Bill Fisher, scholarships awarded

The last piece in the program, “Precious Lord,” was dedicated to Bill Fisher, a long-time music educator from CCHS who has passed. The piece was arranged by Fisher, who created a version of the original piece for marching band.

“We decided to end the concert with this piece in his memory,” Boehman said. Scholarships were awarded to three members of the band who will be continuing their music education in some way, whether that be joining a band or majoring in music.

Ten pieces were performed during the concert, including Boehman’s pick: My Favorite Things, arranged by Paul Murtha, a jazz adaptation of the original piece from The Sound of Music. Boehman’s past band director Don Martin’s featured piece was “Procession of the Nobles” composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Christian County High School Colonel Band Director Anthony Darnall’s featured piece was “Them Basses” composed by Getty Huffine.

Winners of the PACB scholarships are David Harper, Timothy Hanley and Sophia Wilson. The scholarships were funded generously by PACB sponsors and donors in the amount of $500 each.

“We’re so proud of our scholarship recipients and know they will do great things,” Boehman said. The next PACB concert will be on June 30 at the Farmer’s Market Pavillion in Cadiz and July 2 at Casey Jones Distillery.
